Underground Gas Storage facility Damasławek
Basic parameters and description of the project:
Following to dynamic developments on the domestic and European gas market, the company is planning to expand its services into natural gas storage and develop an UGS facility in a rock salt deposit.
The development of the storage system is closely aligned with the expected gas demand growth, planned new sources of supply and further liberalisation of the domestic gas market.
The UGS project will involve the construction of the following facilities:
Project status:
GAZ-SYSTEM is currently carrying out analyses, studies and engineering work aimed at determining the feasibility of the development of the UGS facility. The focus is on the geological, environmental and economic aspects of the planned investment, and conceptual studies are being undertaken to define the functionality and design parameters of the storage caverns as well as the necessary water and brine pipelines.
For the purposes of the project, the company is carrying out a number of works, studies and analyses with the support of Polish scientific institutes and research centres:
Project route and location:
The Damasławek salt dome is located in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, in the municipalities of Janowiec Wielkopolski and Żnin.

For the purposes of the project, the company is carrying out a number of works, studies and analyses with the support of Polish scientific institutes and research centres:
- In 2015, hydrogeological and geophysical surveys (a series of seismic surveys) were carried out. The results were reviewed for the feasibility of gas storage.
- In 2018, exploration drilling was completed and comprised two boreholes reaching, respectively, a depth of 1979 and 1625 metres. Core samples were taken from both boreholes, which will serve for better understanding of the geological structure, including the chemical and physical properties of the salt deposit as well as the local hydrogeological conditions. Mechanical, leaching and chemical tests were carried out on selected cores, which will provide the company with the necessary information that is crucial for the success of the project. Preliminary results indicate that both wells are suitable for the development of an underground gas storage facility.
- In 2021, GAZ-SYSTEM signed two FEED contracts, with Antea Polska S.A. for the Damasławek-Mogilno gas pipeline, and with PGNIG Gazoprojekt S.A. for the Underground Gas Storage Facility.
Project route and location:
The Damasławek salt dome is located in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, in the municipalities of Janowiec Wielkopolski and Żnin.
The addition of a gas storage facility to the existing transmission infrastructure will serve the following objectives:
- Strengthen Poland’s position on the European fuel and energy market.
- Ensure national energy security, reliability and continuity of supply.
- More efficient utilisation of the capacity of the LNG terminal in Świnoujście.
- Optimisation of the operation of the transmission infrastructure as well as efficient utilisation of the transmission system and safe network balancing.
- Support the development of the gas market by providing access to a comprehensive range of services including the storage service.
- Ensure storage capacity for mandatory stocks and the competitiveness of the fuel supplier market.
- creates favourable conditions for the development of entrepreneurship by boosting the regional economy.
- opens up new prospects for both economic and social development of the municipalities. The taxes and concession fees that GAZ-SYSTEM contributes each year to the local budgets allow the authorities to undertake and finance additional projects for the development of local infrastructure.
- contributes to increased attractiveness of the local labour market and better comfort and quality of life.
- The contractor responsible for drilling two test holes in the Damasławek salt dome was G-Drilling S.A.
- In 2021, GAZ-SYSTEM signed two FEED contracts, with Antea Polska S.A. for the Damasławek-Mogilno gas pipeline, and with PGNIG Gazoprojekt S.A. for the Underground Gas Storage Facility.
The project is implemented on the basis of the provisions of the Act of 27 January 2022 on the preparation and implementation of strategic investments in the oil sector (for consolidated text see Journal of Laws of 2022, item 483).
In 2013, GAZ-SYSTEM was granted a licence by the Minister of the Environment to explore a rock salt deposit within the Damasławek salt dome with the objective to determine the geological structure of the diapir and its closest surroundings and the feasibility of future underground gas storage in the rock mass.

Under a special act regulating gas infrastructure projects, compensation payments are guaranteed to the owners of the land affected by the project development.
The compensation payment process is carried out in accordance with an administrative procedure, under the supervision of the competent Voivode. First, an independent expert is commissioned to carry out an assessment, which is the basis for determining the amount of compensation. Upon completion of the construction process, the Voivode issues an administrative decision specifying the amount of compensation due.
For more information about the compensation payments and construction process see the section For Landowners.
