The environmental approval for the Poland – Slovakia gas pipeline
On April 28, 2017 the Regional Head of Environment Protection, Rzeszów passed an approval on environmental requirements regarding the construction of the gas pipeline bonding Strachocina and the Border of the Republic of Poland.
The environmental approval related to Strachocina - Border of the Republic of Poland gas pipeline is considered a milestone in establishing an interconnector, to bind transmission systems of Poland and Slovakia. In February 2017, GAZ-SYSTEM and EUSTREAM, a Polish and Slovak transmission system operators, received subsidies from the European Union granted within the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) instrument, provided for construction works regarding this particular connection, totaling at ca. EUR 108 million. The funds are to be addressed to building operations referring to the Strachocina - Border of the Republic of Poland gas pipeline and the gas compressor station, based in Strachocina.
The length of Strachocina - Border of the Republic of Poland gas pipeline will be approx. 59 km (the total length of the interconnector, including the gas pipeline, located in Slovakia - 165 km). An estimated building costs range at ca. PLN 356 million. Construction works are scheduled to be launched as of mid-2018 and terminated in 2020. The investment is carried out in compliance with the provisions of the Act on Investments in Regasification of the LNG Terminal in Świnoujście of April 24, 2009 (Journal of Laws No. 1731 of 2016 - a consolidated text, as amended).
The Poland-Slovakia gas connection, accompanied with the extension of the internal natural gas infrastructure in Poland will constitute a part of the North-South Corridor – a key project of the gas infrastructure, aimed at increasing diversification and safety of gas supplied in Central Europe. This gas pipeline will contribute to opening of the Slovak market to importing the gas from LNG terminal based in Świnoujście.
