GAZ-SYSTEM has obtained Environmental Permit for the FSRU Terminal in the Gulf of Gdańsk
The Regional Director for Environmental Protection (RDOŚ) in Gdańsk issued a decision on the environmental conditions for the project named “Implementation of the FSRU Terminal, including offshore gas pipeline, within the basin of the Port of Gdańsk”. The decision is immediately enforceable. It allows GAZ-SYSTEM to proceed with the next steps necessary to implement this strategic investment project.
- In implementing our projects, we balance technological and environmental issues. Minimising the impact on the natural environment is a priority in all our investments, in particular those conducted in areas of such environmental value as the Gulf of Gdańsk. We will therefore do our utmost to reduce the impact of the FSRU Terminal and the offshore gas pipeline on the environment and to preserve the landscape of this site, – added the President.
The Company will implement a number of measures to reduce the environmental impact of the FSRU Terminal's construction and operation – chief among these is the trenchless crossing of Stogi beach for the gas pipeline connecting the FSRU Terminal with the onshore network. This will ensure that the beach remains intact and can be continuously used without any inconvenience. Furthermore, the offshore section of the gas pipeline will be laid under the seabed, and the jetty itself will be located approximately 3 km from the shore, adjacent to the fairway leading to the Northern Port. This will keep the Terminal's impact on the landscape and potential noise to a minimum. Moreover, the construction and operation of the FSRU infrastructure will not adversely affect the accessibility of the Gulf of Gdańsk for sailors using the marina at Górki Zachodnie.
The construction of the FSRU Terminal in Gdańsk is an investment programme carried out by GAZ-SYSTEM, which is divided into an offshore and onshore component. The former includes the construction of a jetty in the Gulf of Gdańsk, to permanently moor the Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU), i.e. the vessel adapted for the regasification of liquefied natural gas supplied by LNG carriers, as well as the subsea gas pipeline connecting the Terminal with the onshore part. The latter involves the construction of the Gustorzyn-Gdansk gas pipeline, via which the re-gasified LNG will be distributed across the country. The onshore project component already obtained all decisions necessary to start construction.
The procedure for issuing the decision on environmental conditions for the project by RDOŚ in Gdańsk included public consultations organised in parallel by RDOŚ and GAZ-SYSTEM at the end of 2023. The meetings were held with the residents and representatives of the Górki Zachodnie district on 24 October and 20 November 2023. During these, the project’s scope and the means to mitigate its impact on the surroundings were comprehensively discussed. At each stage of the proceedings, parties were given the opportunity to submit proposals and comments.
The European Commission, under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), granted funding to the LNG Gdańsk project for the Work Package: “Engineering works up to obtainment of the building permit for the offshore part of the PCI 6.27 LNG Gdańsk (PL)”. The maximum amount of the awarded support is approx. EUR 19.6 million.
