Six national operators signed a cooperation agreement to develop Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor
Transmission system operators from six EU countries, including GAZ-SYSTEM, have signed a cooperation agreement on a cross-border project - the Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor.
European gas transmission system operators: GAZ-SYSTEM (Poland), Gasgrid Finland (Finland), Elering (Estonia), Conexus Baltic Grid (Latvia), Amber Grid (Lithuania), and ONTRAS (Germany) have signed a cooperation agreement to develop hydrogen infrastructure from Finland through Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland to Germany, thus meeting the objectives of REPower UE 2030 plan.
The Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor is intended to strengthen the region's energy security, reduce the dependence on imported fossil energy and create a fast track to decarbonisation in major sectors of economy including industry, transport, electricity and heating. In the first phase of the project, a pre-feasibility study will be conducted. On the basis of recommendations from the study, a decision on continuation of project development would be made, determining the following steps including the design, construction and commissioning of the hydrogen transmission network.
- The Nordic Baltic Hydrogen Corridor project is described by experts as one of the most promising initiatives in Europe. It is recognised as a crucial element supporting the energy transition. Poland is at an early stage of establishing the hydrogen gas market, but we strive to be an active participant in a number of international initiatives enhancing its development and functioning in the future. The Cooperation Agreement signed with our Baltic partners will enable coordinated activities in this direction, said Marcin Chludziński, President of GAZ-SYSTEM.
The EU member states are currently implementing dynamic changes related to energy transformation and decarbonisation of their economies. Hydrogen fuel is to play the key role in this process. The Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor will support several regional and EU objectives, such as the EU Green Deal, Fit for 55 package and the EU REPower plan.
